Storyline: Amélie is a story about a girl named Amélie whose childhood was suppressed by her Father's mistaken concerns of a heart defect. With these concerns Amélie gets hardly any real life contact with other people. This leads Amélie to resort to her own fantastical world and dreams of love and beauty. She later on becomes a young woman and moves to the central part of Paris as a waitress. After finding a lost treasure belonging to the former occupant of her apartment, she decides to return it to him. After seeing his reaction and his new found perspective - she decides to devote her life to the people around her. Such as, her father who is obsessed with his garden-gnome, a failed writer, a hypochondriac, a man who stalks his ex girlfriends, the "ghost", a suppressed young soul, the love of her life and a man whose bones are as brittle as glass. But after consuming herself with these escapades - she finds out that she is disregarding her own life and damaging her quest for love. Amélie then ...

STALKER!
OK, everyone seemed so impressed with this film that I decided to check it out. Then after reflecting on the absolute blubbering and swooning that most people did about this film I decided to register with IMDB and just see if there might be anyone in agreement with me? Sure the film making is wonderful. Sure it's sort of non-banal escapism. Sure it's "not like anything else seen before," but it seems that what almost everyone reviewing this film is enamored is the "cute factor" and ignoring what is screamingly obvious. The lead character, is apparently a cute, little stalker of a girl, with a plucky, yet dogged tenacity, and a sheepish grin. Sure, no one is murdered in a particularly heinous fashion, and the musical score never once makes you bristle and feel like what she is doing is out of line, but take Audrey Tautou out of the lead and give it to someone like oh say, Roseanne Barr-Arnold, and the tenor of the film gets really dark really quickly. Or just reverse the sexes of the lead actors in the film for that matter. It's seems odd to me that the newest criminal blight de jour is stalking, (and not just the headline grabbing celebrity stalking,) and everyone is up in arms if an ex-lover, romantic, "admirer", or frequent passerby (stalker by today's standards) so much as breathes out of line in regards to their said "target" and they are immediately banished to the fringes of society or locked away. But put a happy little face on it and some devilishly cute eyes and perhaps some long sexy legs and everyone is ready to forgive her stalking actions and attribute it to delightful eccentricity and / or whimsy. This movie is definitely a mixed message. In the present political climate, it's best to take heed of what messages you take in and not to take them at face value but to look deeper and see what the real message is. The screamingly apparent message of this movie is that if you are cute and sprite-ful, you can be a stalker, win the target of your obsession, and get away with it. And the funniest thing is, everyone seems to have ignored the fact that that is THE major theme in this film, and because of the stylistic film making, they have just fallen head over heels in love with it and completely ignored the face value substance of the film. If stalking is cute, change the laws in your state.

Two words: Tres Magnificent! (10/10)
I have been slightly obsessed with this film since I first watched it when it came out. Always found many French movies a tad hard to digest prior to Amelie; but this changed my mind completely. To be honest, anything by Jeunet and Caro is simply genius! This film has it all. A beautiful set and backdrop. A story you can't help but to fall in love with. A great sense of humour. Odd and quirky characters; all portrayed perfectly by the entire cast. It is one of those movies you want to go on forever. If you haven't watched Amelie yet, then you are in for a spectacular treat. It makes an unforgettable impression. If you have watched Amelie already, then hey - watch it again (and again and again)!

Masterpiece
Let me start off by saying this movie could possibly have a completely different effect on people whose main language is English, compared to somebody who can comprehend the French language fluently.

For me, not knowing any French, there is something beautiful about the language, the accents, the words which you pick up on because you like the sound of yet you don't know quite what they mean, that makes this movie special. It's not just because the words are French, it's how they are spoken in this movie. They are spoken by most of the important characters in such a mesmerising and subtle manner that really entices and intrigues you. This alone will make the movie very watchable even if you can't bear subtitles.

Audrey Tautou is adorable in this movie, so sweet and charming that you just can't help but think "I wish more people like her were out there." To me, there is no significant plot in this movie; it doesn't feel like the creators of this movie were intending to write a plot at all. Instead, it feels as if they are trying to get a strong message across which is portrayed through Amelie and her innocence (or non-innocence?). This message is one of real morals, the feeling and power of true love and the beauty of the simple things in life.

Personally I am not a huge fan of romantic films. I certainly don't go out of my way to watch very many of them, usually because they appear to me as cliché and over-exaggerated. Ignorantly, I thought this was going to be similar. I could not have been more wrong. This movie portrays true romance in a way you haven't seen before.

Why? It's simple: because each romance that exists in this world is unique to the person experiencing it. You cannot generalise, because only that individual knows what they feel like... unless they meet their soul-mate. The oddness of Amelie's way of thinking and her road to finding her soul-mate is what makes you feel 'warm' when the credits start to roll.

To sum this masterpiece up: An often humorous, eccentric and delicate story about a girl who is 'different'.

Obnoxious film about a woman-child who can't find a man.
Let's be honest: is this film really worthy of being in the Top 250? What with all the psychotic behavior and the annoying, creepy smiles Amélie cracks from time to time while she's trying to be cryptic and heroic, this film is easily one of the worst I've seen. The worst part is when people go on trying to defend it, saying that the character is simply misunderstood and that since the film is french, it offers a different perspective. Do we have to remind people that foreign films also have the ability to suck as much as American films? And I tried to give this movie a chance but the more I tried, the easier it was to find things that I didn't like about it. So go ahead, defend it as much as you like, but it doesn't change the fact that it's one of the most annoying films of the decade.

a film about bravery and the little things
This film explores how we define a person, introducing us to each character through their trivial likes and dislikes that in fact tell us more about those people than the typical questions we ask each other. It is a film of little things that make life magical when they are noticed. Amèlie takes on the role of trickster fairy, ensuring that those moments are noticed by even the most oblivious. She brings herself fulfillment through her good deeds to others, and yet, along the way it becomes clear that these acts are her way of running away from herself, avoiding the advancement of her own story. With the help of those she has helped she is able to find the courage to claim the happy ending she deserves, face to face, mask off.

number one
the truth is one of the best movies I have seen, the color, the script, acting, editing and especially the music .... my god... this is art in the style of Amelie. Actually my taste in music composition was strongly influenced by this film. The way you see the world according Amelie's how it should all look and above all the little details that begin a work and lead to a unique history and to never forget. Let's talk about color, strong hue of green and red, two basic contrasting colors; matching all along story, the special treatment given to the tonality, lighting match with the whole concept of the mind of Amelie, Amelie world that is different from what appears but is simply a way of seeing life. This and much more is Amelie but for me it is simply the best movie we can enjoy!

Love it!!!!!
Amazing movie telling how you should take a chance and get what you want instead of sitting back and letting everything slip away! If the story does not move you in some way, even the most miniscule amount, I do not know what can. Audrey Tatou is great as the shy girl out to make her small world in Montmartre a better place by finding little ways to make someone's day, but forgetting to look after her own happiness in the process. Mathieu Kassovitz is adorable as Nino the eccentric collector. Jean-Pierre Jeunet is excellent at what he does and I cannot wait to see his new partnership with Audrey Tatou in "The Long Engagement"!

cute, but not all that
I thought it was entertaining, but not one of the top five films of 2001. And definitely not one of the top 100 of all time. It could be slow, and then took some turns that were not supported anywhere else in the movie (does she only do acid right before going to bed?) I thought the scene through the glass at the cafe was great, but the movie was not.

Spirit-lifting..
Another one that deservedly goes straight to my top-movies list! A soul- refilling experience that restores your faith in life and people... a reality check of life's little pleasures.

Audrey Tautou played Amelie to perfection that I can't really digest her performance in any other movie; she is and will always remain the doe- eyed, innocent and lovable Amelie to me. The rest of the cast are quite perfect for their roles as well.

There isn't much to be said about the movie which traces the life of a simple 23-year-old French waitress with a wild imagination; however, each and every detail counts and adds something to this colorful visual painting and the experience as a whole. Direction and cinematography are simply beautiful!

One more thing: Yann Tiersen's extremely becoming and salient music is like God's final touches on earth! Funny, gripping and spirit-lifting, this is a movie you will never get tired of watching over and over again.

Tragedy?
I was to see a film proving that you don't need a tragedy to make it good. That may cause some people to think it's not that deep but they should look again. If there is a tragedy it's those people's apathy toward humanitarian films like this. It's nice to see so many liked it.

For me it also contained a nice subtle social commentary on celebrity. (all the fuss over Princess Diana humanitarian efforts when there are hundreds of other 'nobodys' out there doing the same thing). My favourite scene would have to be the man at the bar pouring his heart out while the bar tender makes a joke about the microwave.
