Easily one of this year's most entertaining mainstream comedies so far
Suburban couple (Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler) don't have the means to send their beloved daughter to college, so they start an illegal casino with their friend (Jason Mantzoukas) to get rich fast. It's a fast-moving, lighthearted comedy relying on improvised dialogue – not surprising considering the two stars – but also a parody of „get rich quick" stories the American film industry loves so much, regardless of the genre. The improvisational approach is a double-edged sword that can turn a comedy into series of uninspired sketches, but this time it has definitely worked out just fine. The one thing I especially liked about the result is how fluid and flexible the performances feel due to being ready to see where the story takes them. Sure, characters feel one-note and shallow on paper, but there's enough good chemistry between players, and readiness to go with the flow to compensate that. They kind of transcend their characters cartoonish nature and let the good vibe lead the boat. For a summer movie, „The House" feels like a Will Ferrell fan service on a budget: 88 minutes including end credits, only two stars and one famous guest cameo. But this lean approach also works for its favor. It's compact, doesn't have tedious filler material nor overstay its welcome, and has some good laughs to boot. And there's less dirty jokes than usual nowadays, which is kind of cool too. Can it be compared to a good comedy sketch blown into a full-length movie? Yes, but this can also be said about many American comedies. All in all, If you like Ferrell's brand of mayhem, then you could do much worse than „The House". It may be disposable fun, sure, but it's also easily one of this year's most entertaining mainstream comedies so far. I've always thought Ferrell should do less movies because he tends to not care about screenplay being mediocre, but I always have a soft spot for him. „The House" is another good example why it's fun to have him around. „The House" is authored by Andrew Jay Cohen and Brendan O'Brien, the screen writing team also behind such recent comedies as „Neighbors", „Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising" and „Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates". Cohen is debuting as director too. But no Zac Efron and his mighty abs in sight! It could have been a cool cameo.
What is wrong with everyone hating on this amazing comedy?
WOW is all I have to say. I read most of the (negative) reviews and everyone hating on Will and Amy but I'm unclear what everyone expects - from Will and Amy?! THIS film was their type of comedy - stupid enjoyable fun, and they finally pulled it off to perfection! I want to be clear, although a fan, I'm not a huge fan of either, but they nailed their roles and the comedy in this film that they redeemed themselves and I am now a huge fan of both! Nothing Amy has done in the past has ever made me laugh until now. This is finally the comedy from Will that I've been waiting for from his earlier days.

A bunch of us went to see this and we were in stitches and crying in laughter - and no, we were not drunk or high! This is the funniest comedy I've seen this year and for that matter in a long time.

It was very well written and directed and actually had an entertaining (and for a change) different type of story. All the actors were on point!

Props to everyone involved! I really wish I could find out from all you 'supposedly' Will fans what more you all expected?

It's the perfect comedy and if anyone thinks this is a fake review, check out my over 300 reviews and hundreds of ratings!

A perfect 10/10 from me and I hope there is a part 2 very soon!
Hit & Miss
I saw "The House", starring Will Ferrell-The Zoolander movies, Blades of Glory; Amy Poehler-Sisters, Blades of Glory; Jason Mantzoukas-Dirty Grandpa, Neighbors and Nick Kroll-Vacation_2015, Little Fockers.

Let me start off by saying, I'm not a big Will Ferrell fan. I think some of his movies are funny and some are not. This one is kind of in the middle. If you are a fan, you might like it more than I did. It's funny sometimes but just dumb at other times. Will and Amy play a married couple that are trying to send their daughter to college but they don't have the money. Their friend Jason comes up with an idea to have an illegal casino in his basement and split the money with them-he has money problems of his own and could use the cash. Nick plays a slightly dirty city councilman that wants their money they are getting off the soccer moms and dads. It reminds me a little bit like an episode of a sitcom, except for the language, drug use, violence and the nudity-it's very quick but their is some. There is also a few cameos and one is known from the Avenger movies-here, he plays a mob boss that doesn't like Will & company muscling in on his turf. It's rated "R" for language, drug use, violence and sexual content- including nudity-and has a running time of 1 hour & 28 minutes. It's not one that I would buy on DVD but if you are a Will fan, it would be a good rental.
The Vidiot Reviews...
The House

The upside to running a home casino is having Brittany Spears sue you for breach of contract.

The entrepreneurs in this comedy, however, settle all matters out of court.

When the town scholarship they were relying on for their daughter's education falls through, Scott (Will Ferrell) and Kate (Amy Poehler) have no choice but to turn their friend's foreclosed home into an illegal gambling den for their neighbours' enjoyment.

Starting off small, things quickly snowball as their clientele increases and their illicit establishment begins to encroach on a local crime boss (Jeremy Renner).

While it finds both comedic leads playing familiar parts, for some reason their over-the-top antics actually work in the confines of this oddball farce.

Nothing more than an amalgamation of contemporary frat comedies, The House's saving grace is its generic yet humorous punchlines.

Incidentally, the easiest way to retain your gaming license is to become Native American.

Yellow Light

Wow! Troll's write negative review - its a good thing?
Its really strange how many trolls here rate this film at 1|10 in they fake review, and I have no clue why is that (and where need to write and ask clean this fakes). But, well film was good, and if you know what about typical Will Ferrel role is - this film looks really good. I think actually Kohen write a script around his character. Amy Poehler - is good in this, also as "I am Martha" - pretty funny. And yes its a "stupid" comedy, but in this case its a genre.
Truly 'A'wful
I went in to the cinema expecting to be entertained with a funny and entertaining film. Oh how I was let down. The acting if just plain bad. The humour is almost non-existent, and when there is some, it is dragged out until it is no longer funny. Almost from the beginning I was tempted to walk out of the cinema, but I was hoping that the film would pick up - I wasted the 80 plus minutes of my life.

I do not know when I will be able to risk watching another film with either of the lead (I should use the term 'Actors' here, but I felt that there was nothing that could be referred to as acting in the film from them). Avoid, and save some of your life.
Terrible, Awful Film...and I am a Will Farrell fan!
Don't believe the positive reviews about "The House", they are bought and paid for reviews.

The House is a god awful, terrible film. It has absolutely nothing going for it. The acting is bad, the plot is terrible.

Nobody laughed during the entire film....nobody.

I am a Will Ferrell fan and I like Amy Poehler, I like them both but I just cannot lie to you about this film.

It is so bad that it may ruin both of their acting careers.....it is that bad.

Whew....it stinks.
Piece of garbage
Grade: F because it has 3.8 million F-bombs in it (and it's a terrible movie)

Rating: R

In a Nutshell: Why are so many trashy movies coming out in theaters that glorify extremely bad behavior?

If you like being assaulted by an F-bomb every 2.7 seconds, watching people throw up and get high, then this raunchy piece of garbage is for you.

Uplifting theme:

Crime pays? College is expensive and makes parents go crazy

Things I liked: I liked seeing Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler together again. Besides their SNL background, they were both in Blades of Glory ten years ago. Honestly, Amy Poehler was better than Will Ferrell in this flick. If you see this in theaters, you'll also see Will Ferrell being featured in the upcoming sequel of Daddy's Home. Jason Mantzoukas was really good in this. He and Amy Poehler were both in the zany Parks and Recreation: The Complete Series TV show together. The premise is somewhat interesting, so I was curious what they were going to do with the idea. I live in Las Vegas, so I'm definitely familiar with the idea that the "house always wins." The movie could have been really interesting. It wasn't. There is mention of Panera Bread. Man, I love that place! I thought it about during the rest of the movie.

Things I didn't like:

It's vulgar and stupid. You might chuckle a time or two, but it's not very funny. The family is totally into watching The Walking Dead: Season 1. I was a fan for a few seasons, but I'm over it. It seems they could have picked a newer TV show to be obsessed about.

This is director Andrew Jay Cohen's first film. Hopefully, he learns from his mistakes and chooses better writers next time.

Funny lines: "One of us has to be an adult here. So, you be it." – Kate Johansen (Amy Poehler) "What about Bob?" – Bob (Nick Kroll) The Johansens laugh and refer to the movie Bill Murray was in called What About Bob?. Bob then says, "Am I the only one who doesn't get Bill Murray?" Yes, Bob. Yes, you are. By the way, you should see What About Bob? instead of this one. "Did you just say whom?" – Scott Johansen (Yeah, I'm a Grammar Nazi too.)

Tips for parents: TONS of marijuana, cocaine, alcohol, gambling, blood-gushing violence, and vomit. People flip the bird. Full frontal nudity of men and women walking down the stairs quickly.

This is NOT a movie you could show your family with a filtering service. You would see about a 5 minute clip after the service wiped all of the garbage out. This is a true Rated R movie.

Bland and Forgettable Starring Dumb Characters

The house is the new "Epic" "Hilarious" comedy that stars Will Ferrel. The plot is simple, a family can't afford their daughters college, so they open up an illegal underground casino to pay it off.

Now this movie is roughly 80 minuets, and you could tell that the studio needed to tack on extra scenes just to hit that feature length run time, which is about and hour and a half. For example there are 2 scenes of the family just watching The Walking Dead casually, these both scenes could have easily cut off 10 minuets of the movie! But they obviously needed to keep it in for the movie to even hit theaters.

Now, every single actor/actress in this movie is just acting like their in another stupid comedy movie and they're just waiting for a pay check, these "adults" have no semblance of maturity or any idea of the law and its repercussions if you break said law. These characters make SO many stupid and dumb decisions, like literally setting a guy on FIRE, or cutting off a guys finger with an AXE! I also have a way that the characters NEVER thought of to pay off college. GET A STUDENT LOAN!!!! That is the way that almost every student pays off their college and the idea never even passes their minds as they would prefer to do the illegal way instead.

I'm sorry, the only funny part in this movie was the "fight night" scene, which was only 10 minutes of the movie! Everything else was a below average comedy that only got a few chuckles out of me because overall, I was annoyed by the stupid characters in this movie. I have to give this a 4/10

And the more I think of this movie the more ridiculous I find it out to be! Originally I gave it a 6, but after letting my mind settle and go over the facts, this movie, as a whole, is BELOW average. So a 4/10 is a very fair score.
Never laughed so hard in cinema before.
I have watched many movies but never compelled to write a review. Here is my first one. Yes, the movie was that good. Never laughed so hard in cinema before.

I was fortunate to catch the premiere show. And boy was it fun. After a couple of so-so movies from Will Ferrell last year, this one surely shines. The chemistry of Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler is amazing. There are plenty of good laughs in the movie. Thoroughly enjoyable.

My recommendation, head out to the cinema with a clear head and a box of popcorn. You won't be disappointed.
