Storyline: Amélie is a story about a girl named Amélie whose childhood was suppressed by her Father's mistaken concerns of a heart defect. With these concerns Amélie gets hardly any real life contact with other people. This leads Amélie to resort to her own fantastical world and dreams of love and beauty. She later on becomes a young woman and moves to the central part of Paris as a waitress. After finding a lost treasure belonging to the former occupant of her apartment, she decides to return it to him. After seeing his reaction and his new found perspective - she decides to devote her life to the people around her. Such as, her father who is obsessed with his garden-gnome, a failed writer, a hypochondriac, a man who stalks his ex girlfriends, the "ghost", a suppressed young soul, the love of her life and a man whose bones are as brittle as glass. But after consuming herself with these escapades - she finds out that she is disregarding her own life and damaging her quest for love. Amélie then ...

Original by over-hyped
I saw this film last night, and I think a second viewing might well be worth it. What is good about the film is its originality, the method of filming, the lighting effects, the background music and certain items of the script.

What is bad is its length - the plot doesn't justify 2h10 of film. The whole thing could have easily been locked into 90 minute stint. The other thing is that Paris as portrayed in the film does not really exist as such - it is far more violent, dirty and crowded than the film would suggest.

The film has to be taken as a fairy tale in an imaginary city and in no way connected to present-day reality. But it will no doubt nourish the illusions of foreigners to Paris about the city !

Too much hype has been created over the film - true it is a visual feast and the use of dominant yellow tones ( like Oh Brother ) and a great deal of wind lend a special atmosphere but the plot is overstretched.

Without doubt, the same plot shot by Americans would have had far better results. Over all though, definitely worth a viewing but not if you're feeling too tired. The leading actess, Tautou is cute, and I loved Isabelle Nanty in the role of the tobacconist !

This Movie can CHANGE your life :-)
A year ago, if someone would have asked me "What is your favorite movie ?" , I would not have known what to answer exactly, maybe Fight Club, maybe Vertigo, Indiana Jones even would have come to my mind.

Since June, I have but one answer: 'Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain' !!! It is simply unique in his kind. And now it has come out in the US, I am a bit frightened, because everybody there describes it as a simple 'feel-good movie'. It is so much more than that ! Never before has a movie INFLUENCED my life in such a way. Audrey's performance is simply stunning... she plays with an innocence, a wit, a smartness and naïvity that even someone with 40 years experience could not have done better. (please, will someone give an oscar to that girl, she makes Kidman & Blanchett look pale :-) The score from Yann Tiersen is so beautiful that by now I'm addicted to it ( I read here somewhere something about 'accordeon jingle', please, get some education ;-). The story itself could easily have been abused, and I'm sure that if Hollywood had made this movie, it would have been ridiculous, but now it is a beauty, a pearl amidst broken hearts.

This movie is for everyone who understands passion or who has lost his/her childhood somewhere along the way. If you love art & music, sunshine & poetry than you are qualified for seeing this movie, be warned though...this movie can change your life (and maybe..it will ;-)!

Audrey is superb, Matthieu is better than himself, every actor gives a stunning performance, the scenery is beautiful, the whole movie is amusing, entertaining and charming, even CGI is perfectly done ! 10 out of 10 !!!

Love it!!!!!
Amazing movie telling how you should take a chance and get what you want instead of sitting back and letting everything slip away! If the story does not move you in some way, even the most miniscule amount, I do not know what can. Audrey Tatou is great as the shy girl out to make her small world in Montmartre a better place by finding little ways to make someone's day, but forgetting to look after her own happiness in the process. Mathieu Kassovitz is adorable as Nino the eccentric collector. Jean-Pierre Jeunet is excellent at what he does and I cannot wait to see his new partnership with Audrey Tatou in "The Long Engagement"!

The little girl and the big city.
Jean-Pierre Jeunet has the reputation of making very special movies as: Delicatessen (1991) or Alien:The Resurrection (1997). Here, I got the impression that he learned a lot of Truffaut and Godard and he was certainly terribly influenced by them. He took the most commercial parts of their movies and made than a mixture of his own. After all he is a Frenchman. The over-sentimentality of this movie functions as an escape-goat for the terrible life in our big cities nowadays. Traffic-jams, noise, violence on the streets, loneliness, poverty of the clandestine immigrants living at night and giving a sense of insecurity to the towns. Amélie Poulain (Audrey Tautou) is a girl that never could survive by the way she acts and interferes with the lives of other people. She lives in an artificial surrounding with resemblance of the Paris of the 1950's where everybody knew each other and when there was still a certain family-life. This movie is not showing the reality: it is showing how we would like the world around us. That is the reason of its huge success.

AMAZING!!!
this must be one of THE BEST movies I have seen in the past couple of years. It managed to demonstrate the technical side of today's high-tech movie making (excellent job on digital sound and CG effects), while preserving the artistic qualities. Amazing cinematography, plot and acting. This movie made me laugh my ass off. A comedy and romance all in one. I saw it twice in 2 days and will see it again.

Wish all movies were less Holleywood-hype and more quality, like this one. I am not all artsy and anti-holleywood, but I am getting a bit tired of the cliche movies coming out of USA.

Is Amelie French for Overrated
Amelie: 6/10: Sweet, light and sometimes a little irritating this strangely adult fable starts out very strong and sinks under the weight of it's too cute for words protagonist and her self made predicament. Amelie is a strange bird indeed. She seems initially one of those wonderfully original creations but as time in the movie marches on it becomes obvious. She is a twelve-year-old girl in a woman's body.

Yup she has silly crushes plays silly pranks and a vivid imagination. In fact one could very much see her being played by a twelve year old. This would work perfectly if the movie wasn't so jarringly adult in other ways. (Amelie's quest works in a porn shop, people having hook-up sex in a daytime café)

It is more of a tone issue than any objection to adult content. (As a glance at most of my other reviews will testify.) Also like most twelve-year olds Amelie pulls pranks and games a little to long. (After the 2-hour mark or so I was practically screaming at the screen to get on with it)

Now don't get me wrong the first hour or so is one of the most delightful screen experiences. I loved the traveling gnome (which started a fad that lives on today) and liked the obsessive tape recording man in café.

It also shows a true fantasy version of Paris like You've You Mail's New York. In fact when Amelie is helping others rather than on her own quest the movie seems to move briskly and with purpose.

It is only in her pursuit of love that Amelie fails as both a person and a movie. Just like most twelve-year-old girls.

STALKER
OK, everyone seemed so impressed with this film that I decided to check it out. Then after reflecting on the absolute blubbering and swooning that most people did about this film I decided to register with IMDB and just see if there might be anyone in agreement with me? Sure the film making is wonderful. Sure it's sort of non-banal escapism. Sure it's "not like anything else seen before," but it seems that what almost everyone reviewing this film is enamored is the "cute factor" and ignoring what is screamingly obvious. The lead character, is apparently a cute, little stalker of a girl, with a plucky, yet dogged tenacity, and a sheepish grin. Sure, no one is murdered in a particularly heinous fashion, and the musical score never once makes you bristle and feel like what she is doing is out of line, but take Audrey Tautou out of the lead and give it to someone like oh say, Roseanne Barr-Arnold, and the tenor of the film gets really dark really quickly. Or just reverse the sexes of the lead actors in the film for that matter. It's seems odd to me that the newest criminal blight DE jour is stalking, (and not just the headline grabbing celebrity stalking,) and everyone is up in arms if an ex-lover, romantic, "admirer", or frequent passerby (stalker by today's standards) so much as breathes out of line in regards to their said "target" and they are immediately banished to the fringes of society or locked away. But put a happy little face on it and some devilishly cute eyes and perhaps some long sexy legs and everyone is ready to forgive her stalking actions and attribute it to delightful eccentricity and / or whimsy. This movie is definitely a mixed message. In the present political climate, it's best to take heed of what messages you take in and not to take them at face value but to look deeper and see what the real message is. The screamingly apparent message of this movie is that if you are cute and sprite-ful, you can be a stalker, win the target of your obsession, and get away with it. And the funniest thing is, everyone seems to have ignored the fact that that is THE major theme in this film, and because of the stylistic film making, they have just fallen head over heels in love with it and completely ignored the face value substance of the film. If stalking is cute, change the laws in your state.

Friendly escapism
This movie is a pleasure to watch. It is set in a (non-existant) Paris, clean and filled with friendly people. It's sunny, and misery is only decorum.

"Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain" is *not* the great movie everyone says it is. Don't get me wrong: I enjoyed it thoroughly, but it's easy to score with a magical, slightly surrealistic feelgood movie, where you can leave all human troubles at the doorstep.

Amélie did not "grip" me at any point, because it was so obvious from the start that things would work out. For everybody. Sure, I laughed at some points and marvelled at some technical cinematic wizardry, but that's to be expected of a comedy of this sort.

The eyes of Audrey Tautou are very nice to look into, but her regular girly grins (combined with a larger-than-life zoom-in) got on my nerves, at times.

This movie is not a 10. Over 4600 people thought it was, but I really can't see why. It's a good movie. It's not a great movie. The current top spot in the Movie Top 250 is, in my opinion, undeserved. Either people needed this kind of escapism - post 9-11 and all, but I sense chauvinistic voting.

Do you need to see this movie? Yes, but only as pleasing eye candy. I found no deeper philosophical meaning in "Amélie", but that's not the purpose of the movie.

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

Two sidenotes:

Some elements of the movie were nicked. The travelling garden gnome is part of an internet folklore. The part where Amélie messes with the appartement of the greengrocers was lifted straight out of a story by Roald Dahl, in which a man brings his wife to madness by slowly, but deliberately changing small elements of the house.

Still, it was a pleasure to watch. Leave reason at the door, but remember to pick it up when you leave.

"Presque parfait!",like the French would say...

This piece of art just shocked me.Not by non-sense visual or sound effects, not by its hard, war scenes, not by its too-profound-to-be-understood psycho-socio-sexual comment ,but by its h u m a n i t y. Humanity...Just think about that.Have we all forgotten the sense of this word?In a world that depresses us into our little caves,in a period when no-one is safe and sure about the intentions of his/hers neighbour ,thoughts about giving LOVE and HAPPINESS to the people surrounding you,me,everyone are really really precious. I do not want to speak about the plot, this you have already read in other comments around.I only want to say one thing. If you believe that people can love and give, then just go see this movie right now.You deserve it!

P.S:The soundtrack is just "parfait" as well...

Fantastic...
It is the best film i've ever seen.Only the French could make films as good as this. Amélie explores the trivial things in life and it brings you to some realisations of your own in that our lives are so simple and we only need the simplest of things to keep us happy. Amélie is a must for anyone
